Rains over northwest till July 6, IMD also warns of lightning over Bihar

The IMD on Friday predicted that over the next five days, northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh will experience “fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls”, between July 4 and 6.

Meanwhile, moderate to intense thunderstorm and lightning are also very likely over southeast Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, east Vidarbha and Odisha over the next 12 hours, the IMD warned.

On Thursday, in the third incident of mass deaths due to lightning strikes, as many as 31 persons were killed in UP and Bihar. Of them, 26 persons belonged to eight districts in Bihar, where around 92 persons and 11 persons were killed by lightning strikes on June 25 and June 30, respectively.

According to meteorologists, violent thunderstorms are common in the region during the season.

“Dry winds from Northwest interact with moist winds from the Bay of Bengal, leading to instability of atmosphere and development of intense thunderstorms. The only way to deal with the natural calamity peculiar to the area is precaution,” says Mahesh Palawat from Skymet.

Meanwhile, due to high convergence of strong moist winds from the Arabian Sea along the west coast and cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat and neighbourhood, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are most likely to continue over Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka over the next five days.

A cyclonic circulation also lay over east Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood while a north-south trough is running till east Vidarbha. This is most likely to cause fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thundershower with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Central and adjoining east India during the next five days, the IMD said.
