New Delhi, October 25

Pointing out that over 100 crore doses of Covishield had been supplied in India and many other countries, the Serum Institute of India on Monday sought regular marketing approval for the Covid vaccine, currently authorised for emergency use in the country, official sources said.

The application sent to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) by Prakash Kumar Singh, Director, Government and Regulatory Affairs, SII, comes just a couple of days after PM Narendra Modi held a meeting with domestic Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers.

If the DCGI grants regular marketing authorisation, Covishied will be the second vaccine in the world to receive such approval. Pfizer-BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine has received full US FDA approval for use in individuals 16 years of age and older. — PTI
