Tanwar files contempt plea in SC on Ravidas temple restoration

Former Lok Sabha MP Ashok Tanwar on Thursday moved the Supreme Court, seeking initiation of contempt petition against the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Vice-Chairman and Delhi Chief Secretary for failing to implement the top court’s 2019 directive for the restoration of idols and reconstruction of the Guru Ravidas temple at Tughlaqabad, Delhi.

Tanwar pointed out that the Supreme Court had in October 2019 ordered the reconstruction of the Guru Ravidas Temple demolished by the DDA and had given the government six weeks to constitute a committee of devotees to build the temple.

“However, even after expiry of almost four months, no such committee has been formed to date,” Tanwar submitted. “The government has already formed a trust in the Ayodhya matter, while it is yet to take any action regarding the temple for Guru Ravidas, who is worshipped by the Scheduled Castes,” his counsel Virag Gupta told The Tribune.

“Let there be peace,” a Bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, had said and ordered quashing of all criminal cases registered against those indulging in violence during the agitation for rebuilding the temple. — TNS
