A travelling ticket examiner (TTE) came as a lifesaver for 48-year-old Suresh Jangra, who suffered a heart attack on board an express train and needed immediate medical attention.
TTE Virender Johar not only gave the patient first-aid but also arranged for an ambulance at Alwar Railway Station (Rajasthan) to take him to the hospital. Johar has received appreciation from his seniors as well as the common man for the heroic act. Jangra boarded the Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Rajkot Express from Rewari Railway Station for Bakaner (Rajasthan) around 3 pm on Friday.
“I found Jangra lying on a second-class sleeper berth and sweating profusely when I approached him to examine ticket. He was finding it hard to breath or speak,” Johar told The Tribune over the phone. Johar said since his mother was a chronic heart patient and had faced similar symptoms in the past, he knew Jangra was suffering a heart attack. “I opened windows for fresh air and gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which included mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He regained consciousness and confirmed that he had acute chest pain,” he said.
The TTE then alerted the Railway Control Room in Jaipur and requested an officer to arrange an ambulance.
“We went around the train to find a doctor and luckily found one. On checking Jangra’s pulse rate, he suggested the patient required immediate medical aid. “As soon as the train arrived at Alwar station, an ambulance took Jangra to a private hospital where doctors saved his life,” said Johar. Tarun Jain, PRO, North-West Railways, said they commended the TTE for his life-saving act.
