Unnao victim buried; PM stresses on women’s safety

Even as the PM at a police function in Pune today stressed on effective policing to ensure women’s safety,  asking officials to improve the image of the force to inspire confidence among all sections, including women, a village in UP bade farewell to the Unnao rape victim. 

The kin agreed to perform the last rites only after being assured a government job for a member of the family. Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Mukesh Meshram spoke to the family for over 30 minutes, till they agreed to perform the last rites on the condition of a government job. Meanwhile, the UP Government has suspended seven policemen for negligence of duty. “SHO Ajay Tripathi and six other cops have been suspended for negligence in connection with the victim’s death,” Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said. — TNS & PTI
