Congress leader and spokesperson Udit Raj on Thursday evoked sharp reactions from the BJP for saying that UP government was wrong to organise the Kumbh in Allahabad and spending on it.
“No religious teachings and rituals to be funded by the government. The state doesn’t have its religion. UP government spent Rs 4,200 crore in organising the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad and that too was wrong,” Raj said in a tweet adding that this was his personal opinion and not of the Congress.
Raj said his statement was in respect of Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks that the state should not fund religious education.
BJP attacked Raj saying he was mirroring Congress’ mindset.
BJP spokesman Sambit Patra hit back tweeting, “Friends, this is the truth of the Gandhi family. First they gave an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying Lord Rama is an imagination and now Priyanka Vadra ji says that Kumbh mela should also be closed. That’s why the world says Rahul and Priyanka are opportunistic Hindus.”
Raj said he never argued for Kumbh to be closed and only questioned its state funding.
