New Delhi, July 1
As a vacation Bench of the Supreme Court made scathing comments against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her alleged remarks on Prophet Mohammed, a petition on Friday demanded withdrawal of the judges’ oral observations.
In his letter petition addressed to Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, petitioner Ajay Gautam claimed the comments made by the Bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala should be declared “uncalled for and withdrawn”. The petition, a copy of which has also been sent to the President, sought to highlight that “after such comments by the top court judges, Nupur Sharma would be denied a fair trial”. He said the judges’ remarks linking Nupur’s comment with the beheading of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur “justified the brutal act and amounted to giving clean chit to the killers”.
Gautam contended that Justice Surya Kant’s remarks created a wrong impression in general public and the judiciary would lose credibility. He urged the Chief Justice of India to issue a suo motu order to transfer all cases against her to Delhi and order fast-tracking of the trial.
Killers had bike with number ‘2611’
The bike used by Udaipur killers to escape had ‘2611’ as registration number, a possible reference to the November 26 (2008) attacks. Accused Riaz Akhtari is learnt to have paid extra for this number
