National Mathematics Day

Jalandhar: PG department of mathematics, Lyallpur Khalsa College, organised an event, in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, as a part of the National Mathematics Day. The programme saw an active participation of over 400 students from 22 colleges of the region. The programme comprised of competitions based on quiz, debate, poster, model presentation, extempore, rangoli, model and PowerPoint presentations. Dr RR Sinha, Head of the Department of Mathematics, NIT Jalandhar, was the chief guest on the occasion. Principal Dr Gurpinder Singh Samra highlighted the role played by the college in the field of mathematics.

Workshop on pottery

Jalandhar: The department of sculpture of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, organised a three-day workshop on pottery/terracotta. Eina Bhatia, a ceramic artist, was the resource person of the day. Principal Dr Sucharita Sharma said students from all these streams were connected with this art. Learning it from experts will undoubtedly benefit them. This will also help them to learn new ways and techniques of pottery. Various faculty members from different departments also participated in the workshop.

Lecture on co-ordination chemistry

Jalandhar: The PG Department of Chemistry from Kanya Maha Vidyalaya organised a series of extension lectures. The first lecture was based on co-ordination Chemistry. The resource person for the lecture was Dr Heena Rekhi, Assistant Prof, department of chemistry, GSSDGS Khalsa College, Patiala. Dr Heena enlightened the students about coordination chemistry and its applications in various fields like inorganic synthesis, genobiotics and drug delivery. She also motivated the students to appear in various competitive examinations and also suggested tricks to solve the questions related to inorganic chemistry. The second lecture was based on ‘Applications of Smart Wet Ability Surfaces’. The resource person for this lecture was Dr Vikramjeet Singh, department of chemistry, NIT Jalandhar.

PIE Day celebrated

Jalandhar: Eklavya School, Jalandhar, celebrated Pie Day on its school premises. The number is represented by the Greek letter which is a constant with value 3.14. Various programmes and activities were organised on the occasion. The basic aim to celebrate such a day was to foster scientific temperament among the youth and encourage them in the world of mathematics. Primary school participated in various mathematics activities such as making paper plate clock, pizza fractions. Middle and senior school participated in poster making competition. Quiz competition and objective test competition were also organised for the day with the themes of ‘Indian mathematics’ , ‘Mathematics for life” and ‘Modern day mathematics’ .

Spell Bee contest

Jalandhar: Saloni Mahajan from MGN Public School has been declared winner for Jalandhar city final of ‘Classmate Spell Bee season 12’. The finals for 30 cities, including Jalandhar were held online. Saloni will now take part in national final of the competition. In the initial phase, an on-ground exercise was conducted among major schools in 30 cities. The top 15 scorers from the 30 cities participated in the city’s finals round. The grand finale will witness competition between top 16 participants for the title of national champion. The winner will get Rs 2 lakh, a trip to White House and to witness Scripps National Spelling Bee 2020 in Washington DC.

Seminar on digital literacy

Jalandhar: A seminar was organised by the computer department of DAV College to raise awareness of digital literacy among the Backward Classes residing near Shankar Garden. In which people were informed about the basic services of mobile as well as the use of digital payment app Paytm, social media and online food order apps (Zomato and Swiggy). Subhash Arora (DSP Central Jail, Ludhiana) was the chief guest. College principal Dr S K Arora said digital literacy was the need of society. From the department, Dr Nischay Bahl informed the people about the safe use of debit and credit cards.

Poster making, debate competition

Jalandhar: To commemorate 70 years of Indian Constitution, the Department of Laws, Guru Nanak Dev University, Regional Campus here, in Collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, Jalandhar, organised a poster making and debate competitions on its campus. Jaapinder Singh, Civil Judge, Senior Division-cum-CJM-Cum-Secretary (DSLA), presided over the function and gave away the prizes. He sensitised students and faculty about their fundamental rights and duties.

‘the hidden bartender’

Jalandhar: To explore the hidden talent of students, CT Institute of Hotel Management (CITHM) organised ‘The Hidden Bartender’. The uniqueness of this competition was that it was open for all age groups. A total of 58 students registered for the first round where in all students came with a mocktail recipes which they were supposed to prepare before the food and beverage experts from CTIHM. Out 58 students, 10 were shortlisted for the final round in which they were provided with a mystery ingredient which they were supposed to use to prepare a mock tail from the same. Many mystery ingredients were provided to them.
