New building of Sakhi, one-stop centre for women, to open soon

The new building of Sakhi, a one-stop centre at the Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Civil Hospital, will be opened soon.

The centre, which is currently operational in the building of the Mother-Child Care Centre, will be now shifted to the new building as the construction work has been completed. The Sakhi centre will also be integrated with 181 women helpline of the Punjab Police.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said an amount of Rs 48 lakh was spent on the construction of the new building which had separate rooms for medical aid, police assistance, legal aid/case management, psychosocial counselling and temporary support services.

He said the centre would prove a boon for needy women by providing a healing touch to victims of domestic violence, exploitation and other cases.

He said the centre, which was operating in the Mother-Child Care Centre, has been offering assistance to victims in cases such as rape, domestic violence, physical and mental harassment, besides others.

Sharma said in case the victim was a minor, the cases were solved in coordination with authorities/institutions established under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, and Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012.

He added that the integration of the Sakhi centre with women helpline 181 would make the services more accessible to women in distress. — TNS
