Now, get info on nearby toilets on Google Maps

With an objective to curb open defecation, the Municipal Corporation (MC) installed boards to educate the people that they could now get information about nearby toilets in the city on Google Maps, a web mapping service.

Information on all hotels, restaurants and petrol pumps has been made available on Google Maps. The MC has also uploaded information on around 50 public and community toilets. MC officials said commercial establishments could not deny access to their toilets.

A number of MC toilets are in a bad shape. Though the MC had installed around two dozen PVC fabricated portable toilets at various locations, many of these are lying locked. MC officials said water and sewerage connections were not available.

The city was awarded the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status under the Swachh Bharat Mission last year. A team from the Centre recently visited the city to carry inspection for awarding the ODF ++ status. Dr Ajay Kawar, Municipal Health Officer, said: “At present, 50 public toilets are functional. Around 20 more toilets will get functional soon. Moreover toilets at hotels, restaurants and petrol pumps in the city are open to public use.
