Patiala, March 15

Cocking a snook at the order of refraining from large gathering in the wake of coronavirus scare, hawkers, vendors and cart-pullers started their business at the famous Sunday Market at Chotti Baradari here.

Consequently, the area was crowded with shoppers as the day passed. As per the health experts, the market, set up to sell ‘economical’ goods, was vulnerable to the spread of coronavirus because people from different states came there to purchase items.

Though the state government already directed the administration to shut down educational institutions, gyms and fairs to avoid large gatherings to contain the spread of coronavirus, the administration and the Health Department failed to stop traders from putting up their stalls at the market.

The police tried to stop the vendors in the morning, but by the afternoon, the stalls were set up. DC Kumar Amit, said, “It is clearly mentioned in the government orders that only gyms, cinema halls and swimming pools are closed.” However, the police reached the market in late evening to close the market.
