The Department of English, Multani Mal Modi College, today organised an insightful interaction with renowned journalist, translator and writer Nirupuma Dutt. The event was a thought-provoking discussion with students and faculty on the topic “Reading Literature in the Digital Landscape.”

Vaneet Kaur, Head of the English Department, emphasised the vital role of literature and reading in personal development. She remarked, “Literature serves as a mirror to society and a window to different cultures and thoughts. It fosters creativity and imagination, allowing readers to step into the shoes of others. In an increasingly digital world, instilling love for books is essential for nurturing critical minds and compassionate individuals.”

Nirupama Dutt, known for her compelling narratives and insightful perspectives, shared her experiences and interactions with different writers like Amrita Pritam, Shiv Kumar Batalavi, Surjit Pattar and Gurdyal Singh. She discussed her opinions on how digital media is transforming the way people relate with literature. In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, Dutt emphasised the importance of adapting to new reading habits while cherishing traditional literature.

She noted, “Digital platforms have made literature accessible to a broader audience, yet there lies a risk of superficial engagement. It’s crucial to cultivate a deeper appreciation for storytelling, regardless of the medium.”

Principal Neeraj Goyal said, “In today’s fast-paced world, the challenge is not just to read but to engage meaningfully with what we read. Literature allows us to explore diverse perspectives, develop critical thinking and foster empathy.”
