Patiala, August 2
Covid cases seemingly are on the rise in the district. The Health Department informed that Patiala district had reported 888 positive cases in July.
This number is three times higher than the cases reported in the month of June. As per the record of the Health Department, the district had reported only 270 cases in June.
Health officials claimed that Covid cases were on the rise from the first day itself in July. Health officials have blamed sub-variants of Omicron for spike in Covid cases.
In fact, the district has already reported the prevalence of BA.5, an offshoot of the Omicron family. The new variant is stated to be potent and can evade immunity despite being vaccinated and contracting infection earlier.
The people at large, said experts, had become complacent towards Covid. Such behaviour also contributed to the constant rise in coronavirus cases, experts added. “As of now, people, despite having Covid-19 symptoms do not come forward for testing and don't follow appropriate behaviour. People have stopped wearing face masks even in large public gatherings,” said district epidemiologist Dr Sumeet Singh.
The Patiala Civil Surgeon, Dr Raju Dhir, said, “To avoid another Covid wave people have to wear face masks and wash hands regularly. Apart from this, people should get their due doses of vaccination on time.”
