The ‘Swachhta hi Seva Fortnight’, celebrated under the Swachh Bharat Mission, concluded today on Swachh Bharat Day, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. An event to mark this was jointly organised by Patiala District Administration, Municipal Corporation, Water Supply and Sanitation Department and the Punjab Pollution Control Board.

Was Unable to meet DC, despite taking time: MP
  • Patiala MP Dr Dharamavira Gandhi claimed he waited for over two hours outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office but had to return without meeting her after she was not available. “I had taken time in advance and wanted to raise the issue of candidates facing problems with the filing of nomination papers for the panchayat polls. However instead of meeting me, despite an advance notice, the DC did not inform or meet our delegation,” said Gandhi
  • Reacting to it, DC Preeti Yadav said she had to leave for a grain market inspection in Nabha and had designated the ADC to accept the documents and the complaint. “We will forward the same to the state government and the election commission,” she said

At the district-level function, held at Thapar University, Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav and Municipal Commissioner Rajat Ubrai honoured sanitation workers from the Municipal Corporation, Health Department and Water Supply and Sanitation Department, along with social service organisations and students who contributed to cleanliness efforts.

Speaking on the occasion, Yadav emphasised reducing waste generation and segregating wet and dry waste at home. She urged all citizens to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and to commit to environment-friendly waste disposal practices. “We must all take a pledge to manage waste responsibly to prevent the accumulation of garbage,” she said.

Municipal Commissioner Rajat Ubrai urged residents to segregate biodegradable waste for composting and recycle plastics and other dry waste. He announced the MC would soon install a compressed biogas (CBG) plant to generate biogas and energy. Additionally he said by March 31, 2025, the corporation aimed to clear the existing garbage dump and transform the area into a public park, a goal that could only be achieved with the cooperation of the city’s residents.
