PRTC to tap solar power: Minister

Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said the Old Bus Stand in the city has been revitalised, with bus services now being provided to nearby towns within a 30-km radius, including Cheeka, Samana, Nabha, Rajpura, Ghanaur and Pehowa.The PRTC was finalising a comprehensive solar plant installation project, the minister said while adding that the ambitious plan included setting up of solar facilities at the Head Office, all depots and bus stands.With a proposed 775 kW solar installation at an estimated Rs 2.87 crores, the project was expected to generate annual power cost savings of approximately Rs 97 lakh, with a projected payback period of less than three years, he added.

The Cabinet Minister said the Transport Department was expanding its fleet and creating economic opportunities through the Km scheme. A total of 85 new buses would be introduced, with Letter of Intents (LoIs) already issued to 81 persons, fulfilling the state government's commitment towards generating self-employment and empowering local entrepreneurs, he said.

The PRTC is going to develop its first sub-depot at Daula village in Gidderbaha for enhancing public transportation infrastructure. Sharing details, Bhullar said the project would be operationalised by January 31 next year at an estimated cost of Rs.3.36 crores.

He said the project would not only address the infrastructural needs, but also respond directly to the longstanding demands of local residents.
