Patiala, June 18

Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University in collaboration with Rotary Club organised a tree plantation drive here today. The university administration planted over 50 saplings during the drive.

University officials said the drive was conducted for increasing green cover of the city. Over 50 volunteers took part in the campaign. The saplings were planted at designated spots on the university campus. While discussing benefits of trees Dr Manjeet Singh, Professor, Punjabi, said, “It has become an urgent need of the hour to protect the environment from air pollution and global warming. Trees are felled on the pretext of development or for brazen commercial purposes.”

The university Vice-Chancellor (VC), Dr Karamjeet Singh, said, “Tree plantation is important for community and for conserving the environment. Such initiatives go a long way in inculcating awareness among students.”—TNS
