The release of Diljit Dosanjh’s film Punjab ’95 has been stalled again. Two days ago, Dosanjh had announced that the film based on the life of slain human rights activist Jaswant Khalra would be released internationally on February 7.

Its release was stalled in the country due to various issues raised by the Censor Board of Film Certification in India. On Monday evening, the actor updated on a social media platform that Punjab ’95 will not be released on February 7 globally due to unforeseen circumstances.

Apologising to his fans, Dosanjh said on Instagram: “We are sorry and it pains us to inform you that Punjab ’95 will not be released on February 7 due to circumstances beyond our control.”

Dosanjh-starrer movie, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, has been facing setbacks since early 2023 when it was first announced that the film would be screened at the Toronto Film Festival.

However, a few days later, the film was removed from the line-up for the film festival, as the censor board had raised some objections, demanding certain cuts besides changing the name of protagonist Jaswant Khalra.

The film, earlier titled as “Ghallughara”, hit the roadblock after the censor board delayed clearance with a request to change the title and content. Jaswant Khalra, on whose life the film is based, fought against alleged fake encounters of Sikh youths by the Punjab Police during militancy days. Khalra disappeared in 1995, and four police officials were arrested for his alleged kidnap and murder in 2005. The Punjab and Haryana High Court extended the seven-year jail term of the four policemen to life imprisonment in 2007.
