Patiala, March 23
With six deaths in the past 24 hours, the Covid-19 toll for March has now reached 45 in the district.
Of six people who died of Covid today, four had comorbidities, said the Health Department. The deceased included three women. Besides, an 84-year-old resident of Model Town also died of Covid.
A sudden surge in Covid fatalities has already raised an alarm for both citizens and health authorities in the district. The Patiala Health Department said a majority of Covid deaths were reported among patients with comorbidities.
Patiala Civil Surgeon Dr Satinder Singh said deaths were rising at an alarming rate. He said: “People should not hide Covid symptoms and should get tested as soon as symptoms appear. Any delay in the treatment can prove fatal.”
Dr Satinder said patients had been reporting to hospitals at later stages. Therefore, the chances of survival were very less, he said.
Meanwhile, Patiala reported around 219 positive cases on Tuesday. With this, the tally of positive cases has risen to 20, 412 in the district since the outbreak last year. Of 219 positive cases reported today, only 19 were the contacts of the already positive patients and while 200 were reported afresh from hospital OPDs.
District Epidemiologist Dr Sumeet Singh said they had declared one of the streets in New Officers Colony as a micro-containment zone after more than five positive cases were reported from the area.
