SSP Sangrur highlights major crackdown against drugs in 2025: 895 cases registered, 1,313 accused arrested

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, Sartaj Singh Chahal, on Tuesday shared details of the district police’s performance during 2025, highlighting strong action against drug trafficking, illegal liquor trade, organised crime and cyber fraud.
The SSP said that during the year, Sangrur Police registered 895 NDPS cases and arrested 1,313 accused. The seizures included 14 kg 602 grams of heroin, 6 kg 607 grams of opium, 2,039 kg 780 grams of poppy husk, 444 grams of charas, 42 kg 213 grams of ganja/sulfa, 660 grams of intoxicant powder, 48,701 intoxicant tablets, 95 vials, and 52 injections.
Drug money amounting to Rs 19,60,710 was also recovered.
He further stated that properties worth Rs 4.29 crore belonging to 11 drug smugglers were frozen under the NDPS Act.
In addition, illegal constructions of 32 smugglers, built using proceeds from drug trafficking, were demolished. In 96 NDPS cases, seized narcotics were destroyed as per legal procedures.
To curb drug abuse, 2,434 drug users were admitted to de-addiction centres. The police organised 2,670 awareness seminars and meetings, along with an anti-drug campaign and athletics meet under the banner “Say Yes to Life, Say No to Drugs”.
Action against the illegal liquor trade led to the registration of 407 cases and the arrest of 421 accused. Recoveries included 6,734.625 litres of country liquor, 1,032 litres of illicit liquor, 199.5 litres of IMFL, 500 litres of spirit, 5.75 litres of beer, and 12,300 litres of lahan.
Under the Arms Act, 24 cases were registered, resulting in the arrest of 35 accused and the recovery of 30 pistols/revolvers, 77 cartridges, and eight magazines. Under the Gambling Act, 25 cases were registered, 50 accused arrested, and Rs 1.50 lakh recovered.
The SSP said that during the year, two blind murder cases were successfully traced, 133 stolen vehicles were recovered, and 8,635 public grievance applications were disposed of.
Additionally, 119 proclaimed offenders were arrested.
In cybercrime cases, 1,086 complaints were resolved, leading to the recovery of ₹1.48 crore, while 580 lost mobile phones were traced and returned to their owners.
Recognising outstanding service, 121 commendation certificates were awarded to gazetted officers. Police personnel also received 198 DGP Discs, one Chief Minister’s Medal, nine local ranks, 12,124 commendation certificates, and cash rewards worth Rs 13.58 lakh.
Highlighting achievements in sports, SSP Chahal said around 550 children are training at the Police Lines, Sangrur. During 2025, they won 518 medals at national and state levels across various sports. Seventeen children have secured government jobs, while many others gained admission to higher courses under the sports quota.
Extending New Year 2026 greetings, SSP Chahal reaffirmed that Sangrur Police would continue its relentless fight against crime and remain committed to public service.
