Teachers want employment opportunities, stage dharna

Patiala, September 30

Demanding jobs, unemployed physical education teachers held a protest at Fountain Chowk here for hours today.

The protesters blocked the chowk, which is one of the busiest roundabouts of the city. Commuters were a harried lot because all roads leading to Fountain Chowk were blocked by the traffic police as a precautionary measure.

The protesters staged a dharna and raised slogans against the state government for not creating enough job opportunities for the unemployed youth. The unemployed teachers said though the government had advertised 873 posts for diploma in physical education (DPE) teachers, but the number was very less given the huge number of qualified unemployed teachers. Moreover, the posts, protesters said, were advertised after 14 years. The protesting teachers demanded that 1,000 more posts should be advertised. They opined that government should advertise the posts on regular intervals.

It is pertinent to mention that unemployed DPE teachers have been protesting atop a water tank for the past two weeks.

The protesters lifted the dharna after receiving a written assurance of meeting with the Education Minister on October 6.
