Woman, 4-year-old daughter jump to death in Bhakra Canal
In a heartbreaking incident, Reshma Rani, 31, and her four-year-old daughter Riana took their own lives by jumping into the Bhakra Canal near Sanipur village. This act is allegedly linked to ongoing harassment by Reshma’s husband and mother-in-law. The bodies of both were recovered from the canal and have been handed over to their relatives following a postmortem.
Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh from the Sirhind police station said the complaint was filed by Noor Mohammad, Reshma’s brother, who resides in Sanipur. He said Reshma was married to Amir Khan from Majri Krishna Wala in the Amloh Sub-Division and they had two children — a son and a daughter. Noor Mohammad accused Amir Khan and his mother Niamta of persistently harassing Reshma for dowry. He alleged Amir Khan had an extramarital affair and threatened Reshma with divorce.
On January 1, Noor Mohammad reported Amir Khan and Niamta verbally abused Reshma and forced her out of their home, prompting her to seek refuge at her parents’ house. On January 17, Reshma contacted Amir expressing her wish to return home; however, he allegedly threatened to commit suicide if she did so. This left her in a state of distress.
On January 18, without informing anyone, Reshma left her parents’ home with Riana and jumped into the canal. Family members began searching for them after they went missing, but it was only later that their bodies were discovered.
The police have initiated legal proceedings against Amir Khan and Niamta based on Noor Mohammad’s statement. The bodies of Reshma and Riana have been returned to their family after the necessary postmortem procedures were completed at a civil hospital.
