Mohali, March 28

Residents of Mohali are unhappy over the rate of vegetables fixed by the district administration yesterday.

The poor said due to high price of vegetables, they were eating ‘chapati’ with only salt and pickle.

Raj Kumar, Bablu, Ramita, Sushil Kumar, all residents of Azad Nagar, Balongi, said they were working in factories on a daily-wage basis. So, now they can’t afford vegetables at high prices.

Meanwhile, Akali Dal councillor Sukhdev Singh has written a letter to the Punjab Chief Minister, urging him to decrease the rates of grocery items. He said the current price of vegetables and fruits was unaffordable for a common man. He said even the rates fixed by the district administration were 1.5 to 2 times the market rates.

Sukhdev Singh also wrote to the CM that all vendors are taking advantage by fixing the prices as per their wishes.

Bhupinder Singh, Chairman, small scale industries, Mohali, suggested the administration that the rates of these items should be fixed by calculating the actual costs. He said feedbacks should be taken from industrial experts in this regard.

The Mohali DC had fixed the maximum price of potato at Rs 50 per kg, onions Rs 45 per kg, tomato Rs 60 per kg, cauliflower Rs 40 per kg, peas Rs 120 per kg, carrot Rs 50 per kg, green chilies Rs 20 per 100 gm, ginger Rs 25 per 100 gm, lemon Rs 120 per kg, spinach Rs 10-15 per packet, bottle gourd (ghiya) Rs 60 per kg, summer squash (chappankaddu) Rs 60 per kg, garlic Rs 170 per kg, coriander (dhaniya) Rs 10-15 per packet, fenugreek (methi) Rs 10-15 per packet.

However, the vendors are selling potatoes at Rs 60 per kg, onions Rs 60 to 70 per kg, tomato Rs 80 per kg and cauliflower at Rs 50 per kg.
