The UK-based Punjabi Theatre Academy organised a light and sound play — Nanak Ayaa, Nanak Ayaa — at Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary School here on Friday. The play, depicting the life and journey of Guru Nanak Dev, was directed by TP Singh and presented by a group of 15 artistes of the academy.
The two-hour play started with events took place in India before Guru Nanak Dev’s birth. It depicted all major incidents in Guru Nanak Dev’s life that pushed him on a divine path and his journey across several countries. It also depicted the first rendition of ‘mool mantar’ and the message of equality.
TP Singh, who is a well-known British-Asian theatre personality, said he was glad to bring the play to Amritsar as part of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev. The writer of many acclaimed plays, including on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and Shaheed Udham Singh’s story, he was the recipient of an award presented by the House of Commons in 2007 for promoting the Punjabi culture.
Written by Tejinder Sindra, who was born in Attari and later migrated to the UK in 1985, the play is fifth such production of the academy.
