Gurnaaz Kaur

The Punjabi film industry is growing by leaps and bounds. Its popularity overseas, stellar investments and box office returns, influx of new talent and above all, the wide range of storylines and subjects; these factors make it imperative to stay updated on what’s coming next. There are various genres, including comedy, drama, romance, thrill, and action, set to release in 2020.

Action-packed January

The first month of 2020 will see Khatre Da Ghuggu, Jinde Meriye and Gandhi Fher Aa Gea. Khatre Da Ghuggu is a rom-com starring Jordan Sandhu, Diljit and BN Sharma, directed by Aman Cheema. Then there is Parmish Verma, Sonam Bajwa, Navneet Kaur Dhillon and Hardeep Gill-starrer Jinde Meriye, which is directed by Pankaj Batra. Scheduled for a January 24 release, its trailer has already touched over four million views. When there is Parmish Verma in a film, one can expect some action sequences and the trailer proves the point. Marking the comeback of Aarya Babbar is Gandhi Fer Aa Gea that will be released on January 31.

Time for romance

We will see Ammy Virk and Tania marking Valentine’s Day with Sufna. This romantic story is one of the most-awaited movies of the year. A Jagdeep Sidhu directorial, we heard about it from Ammy last October when he wrote on Instagram, “Waheguru sab de sufne poore karan… releasing on 14th feb.. 2020… Written n directed by @jagdeepsidhu3 produced by @prince71_ Will distribute by Inhouse group…” Dev Kharoud’s Zakhmi is also a February release and is based on a story of a family man. With this film, Anchal Singh will debut in Punjabi movies. Another big budget movie scheduled for February 28 is Ik Sandhu Hunda Si. Directed by Rakesh Mehta, it stars Gippy Grewal as Sandhu and opposite him will be Bollywood actress Neha Sharma, debuting in Pollywood.

Gippy gets into action

Talking of Gippy Grewal, the singer-actor-director-producer has quite a packed year. His first production of the year is going to be Posti, based on drug addiction in Punjab. The film is directed by Rana Ranbir and will be released in March. Another film under Gippy Grewal’s production banner is Maa. Not much has been revealed about the film but it is expected to be released in May.

Phatte Dinde Chakk Punjabi is another Gippy Grewal production that will be out in 2020. Directed by Smeep Kang, we will see Binnu Dhillon and Zareen Khan together in this one. It will hit the big screen on July 17. There is news that Carry on Jatta will have its third instalment this year. Gippy did make a mention of prepping for this one towards the end of last year.

Let’s have some laughter

When it’s about Smeep Kang, one can be ready for comedy and apart from the above mentioned films, there is Hera Pheri, which will also be directed by him. The tentative release for Hera Pheri is April 24. What more? The Smeep Kang and Binnu Dhillon duo has Gol Gappe in the pipeline too. Puaada is another romantic comedy scheduled for 2020 and has Ammy Virk and Sonam Bajwa in the lead roles. The flick will see Rupinder Chahal turning a director.

If you love comedy, here’s one more for your calendar. No Life With Wife’s poster on Instagram has created a lot of excitement. Directed by Avtar Singh, it is produced by Karamjit Anmol.

The story proceeds

There are quite a few sequels planned for 2020. Director Simerjit Singh’s Daddy Cool Munde Fool 2 was also announced for 2020 release. Blockbuster Qismat (2018) that introduced talented director Jagdeep Sidhu to the industry will have its second part in 2020. The romantic flick will see Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta again. Comedy film Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo is also coming again. While there were Amrinder Gill and Binnu Dhillon in the first part, we aren’t yet sure if the cast will be the same for this one. Produced by Pitaara Talkies, Speed Records and Omjee Group, Pitaara TV took to Instagram to announce the second offering, “Are U Ready For Full Fun again with#goreyannudaffakaro2 & #daddycoolmunderfool2 ...” We have Mr and Mrs 420 Fer Ton, Dakuaan Da Munda 2 in line as well.

Content is the king

Jagdeep Sidhu is known as a powerful storyteller and his direction is equally admired. After blockbuster Shadaa, he will have a film with Diljit Dosanjh. When we talk of content, Simerjit Singh’s Television, which was earlier scheduled for 2019 release, will see the light of day in 2020. The film has a tagline ‘Tasweeran boldiyan ne’ and has Mandy Takhar and Kulwinder Billa in the lead roles. Inspired by true events, Masand is a film by Sharanjit Jassi, which is set to release on May 15. Daler is another action film that will be releasing this year. It is directed by National Award winning director Sukhminder Dhanjal and stars Dev Kharoud.
