BRITAIN’S determination to exit India as rapidly as possible contributed to the chaos and violence of the Partition that spread outward from Lahore and across Punjab, according to newly opened British government records identified at the British National Archives. The material includes Dominions Office and Commonwealth Relations Office files (DO 133 series) covering the period August-September 1947, when British officials were finalising the Boundary Commission awards and assessing public order and the risk of disorder in Punjab.
