Investing in public transport is investing in people
Nearly 70% of Indians walk, cycle or use public transport to work.
IN the book ‘Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives’, American urban transit planner Jarrett Walker describes 'frequency (of public transport) as being freedom.' The argument is that the freedom that public transport offers people depends on service frequency, that is, how often vehicles come and not just on how far routes go. The idea of associating mobility with freedom is powerful and worth applying to the Indian context.
