Punjab’s agricultural success has long rested on high and stable yields of wheat and rice. This model ensured national food security for decades. Yet beneath this apparent abundance, the ecological foundations of farming are weakening. After years of intensive cultivation, Punjab’s soils are showing clear signs of fatigue, with productivity increasingly sustained through chemical and water-intensive inputs rather than natural soil health.
