Regionalism in India has often been interpreted as a by-product of rising cultural assertiveness. In a country marked by immense linguistic, ethnic, religious and regional diversity, the assertion of identity is both natural and historically rooted. However, to view regionalism merely as a cultural reaction would be simplistic. It is better understood as a complex phenomenon emerging from the interaction of culture, economy, politics and federalism.
