Students under the banner of the Students For Society staged a protest against the CAA-NRC in front of Bhai Gurdas Library at Guru Nanak Dev University here on Tuesday.

Raising slogans against the CAA, the students said the “law was against the very principles of the Constitution”.

“The CAA-NRC is anti-minority and unconstitutional. We have been vocal about its negative impact on our society as a whole and we continue to oppose the CAA. The purpose of the protest was to raise our voices together and show solidarity with other agitators, who are standing for the rights of the minorities,” said Jatinderbir Singh, a research scholar at GNDU.

A few minuets after the protesting students had gathered outside Bhai Gurdas Library, another faction of students under the banner of the ABVP gathered at the site and started raising slogans in favour of the CAA. After seeing the situation, university security staff intervened and requested one of the student factions to leave the venue.

Aditya Takiar, who was in favour of the CAA, said a lot of misinformation was being spread about the CAA-NRC, which was resulting in protests.

“The Act, if one understands it correctly, is not against any minority or a particular community. There are certain political elements that are paying some people to hold protests and gather support against the CAA. We are in support of the Act and we request others to understand its concept first.”
