AAP’s Praveen Sharma elected Moga Mayor amid chaos

Praveen Sharma of AAP has been elected as the new Mayor of the Moga Municipal Corporation. Sharma secured victory with the support of 31 of 50 councillors.

The election process was marred by chaos. Tensions flared in the district administration meeting hall as AAP councillors and members of the SAD engaged in heated arguments, which escalated into a scuffle. The Opposition, including the Congress and the Akali Dal, accused the AAP government of using coercive tactics to sway their councillors.

All Opposition councillors walked out of the meeting. The mayoral seat had been vacant following the unceremonious removal of Baljit Singh Chani on November 27. Chani, who made history in August 2023 by becoming the first AAP mayor in Punjab. In November, AAP expelled Chani from party over alleged links with drug traffickers.
