Ram Chander from Dharangwala village, near Abohar, was conferred with the prestigious Karmaveer Chakra Award and REX Karmveer Global Fellowship, recognising his contributions in mountaineering.

The award is a tribute to the legacy of Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, who had offered to be the ambassador for the awards.

It recognises young leaders for their character-based leadership in the fields of social change, activism, education, self-service and health services. Dr Verghese Kurien, who was known as the Milkman of India, was the first recipient of the Karmaveer Lifetime Achievement Award.

Chander climbed the highest peak in South Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, on January 26.
