Ahead of 2027 polls, Navjot Kaur Sidhu launches Bhartiya Rashtrawadi Party, eyes ‘Golden Punjab’
Launch seen as move that could fragment anti-incumbency vote ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls
In a move that could add fresh churn to Punjab’s already volatile political landscape, former cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu has announced the launch of a new political outfit — the Bhartiya Rashtrawadi Party.
The announcement comes barely two months after her dramatic exit from the Congress. She was first suspended and later expelled following sharp criticism of party leader Rahul Gandhi and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Her remarks – including referring to Gandhi as “pappu” and alleging that a “Rs 500 crore suitcase” influenced leadership choices in Congress — had created controversy and deepened the rift within the party.
While Navjot Kaur has been taking the Congress on, Navjot Singh has stayed away from politics. Notably, his X handle still has Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi on the cover photo, whom he has often described as his mentors and “guiding angels”.
While major parties are yet to issue formal statements, sources said the move was aimed at further fragmenting anti-incumbency votes ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. Navjot Singh’s role in the new outfit remains unclear, with some circles suggesting he may focus on his career in the showbiz industry.
In a detailed social media post, Dr Sidhu described the move as a “much-awaited announcement” driven by “divine intervention”.
She said a group of like-minded individuals had come together after reviewing the performance of existing political leaders, aiming to build a national-level alternative focused on justice, peace and higher consciousness.
The party’s immediate focus, however, remains firmly on Punjab. Dr Sidhu vowed to restore the state’s “long-lost glory” as a ‘Golden State’, emphasising values of love, sharing, selfless service, liberty, freedom and spiritual growth.
“A government of the people, for the people and by the people of Punjab,” she said, adding that the initiative would heal “wounded souls” through the path of “truth and love — the language of Waheguru Ji”.

Dr Sidhu has had a chequered political journey. She won as a BJP MLA from Amritsar East in 2012 before joining the Congress along with her husband, who served as Punjab Congress chief.
