Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha member Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh on Monday said the party led by his son has set up 10-member district-level panels in state’s Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Sangrur.

The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) — the party led by the MP who is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act — was launched during a Maghi Mela conference in Muktsar on January 14.

Dubbed as a Panthic outfit, the party was seen as a rival to the Shiromani Akali Dal, whose vote base among the Sikhs has eroded in recent years. Amritpal’s sympathisers had also formed a five-member executive panel, including Tarsem Singh, to oversee the party’s functioning.

‘To attend Deep Sidhu’s death anniversary event’

Speaking over the phone, Tarsem Singh said apart from setting up the committees in the three districts, they are in the process of forming similar panels in Gurdaspur and Ferozepur. “We have launched the party’s website as well. Our membership drive is under way and we are charging Rs 20 per person for membership,” he added.

He said they don’t have the exact number of people enroled as members till now.

“We are not seeking donations. If we seek donations, some donors might stake claim to the party ticket to contest elections, which could jeopardise our principles,” said Tarsem Singh.

Asked if any party event is scheduled to take place in near future, he said, “Our leadership will attend the event marking the third death anniversary of Deep Sidhu at Chaukiman village near Jagraon in Ludhiana on February 15.”

Sidhu was the founder of the Waris Punjab De organisation and an accused in the Republic Day Red Fort violence case. He had died in a car accident in Haryana.

Mandeep Singh, younger brother of the actor-turned-activist, said, “Deep Sidhu Memorial Trust is observing his third death anniversary at the site where a memorial is proposed to be built. If Tarsem Singh, (Faridkot MP) Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa and Simranjit Singh Mann of SAD (Amritsar) come to attend it, we will provide them with time to address the gathering.”
