A total budget of Rs 764 crore, including Rs 165 crore for land acquisition, has been approved for the project. Officials said the Punjab Chief Secretary has been informed about the sanction and asked to initiate the land acquisition process.
Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Bittu announced the development on Wednesday.
Sources said that apart from its strategic importance, the new rail section will provide a direct link between Ferozepur and Amritsar, reducing the distance between the two cities by 98 km.
The line will also connect the border district directly with ports in Gujarat, giving a significant boost to trade in the region.
