Attempt to uproot Bank of Baroda ATM on NH in Nangal fails, cash intact

An attempt was made to uproot and steal cash from a Bank of Baroda ATM located at Jawahar Market along the National Highway in Nangal in the early hours of Wednesday. Sources said two masked men tried to remove the ATM but failed. Bank officials said Rs 4.5 lakh in cash inside the ATM was safe.

The incident reportedly took place around 1.30 am during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. According to preliminary information, two masked suspects arrived at Jawahar Market in a vehicle and began preparations to carry out the theft.

The suspects first allegedly tried to damage and remove a CCTV camera installed near the ATM. They then removed the external siren, apparently in an attempt to prevent the alarm from alerting people nearby.

The suspects subsequently tried to cut the ATM from its bottom and uproot the machine. However, despite their efforts, they failed to remove it and fled the spot.

The attempted theft came to light in the morning, following which personnel from the Nangal police reached the site and began an investigation. The police are examining CCTV footage from the ATM and surrounding areas to identify the suspects and establish their route before and after the attempted theft.

Bank officials said approximately Rs 4.5 lakh was present inside the ATM at the time of the incident. Since the suspects could not remove the machine, the cash remained intact.

Locals expressed concern over the incident, particularly as the ATM is situated alongside the National Highway.

Nangal police station SHO Danish Veer Singh said an investigation was under way and efforts were being made to identify and apprehend the suspects at the earliest.

The failed theft attempt has raised questions over security arrangements around ATMs, especially those located along busy roads and commercial areas.
