Back to school for Punjab cops probing drug cases

It is back to school for police officials probing drug cases in Punjab. Taking cognisance of the blatant and gross lapses, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure the training of the investigating officers.

Justice Sureshwar Thakur made it clear that the training in batches would be imparted by the experts to officers deputed to investigate drug cases at police academy in Jalandhar and Phillaur. The Bench added training was also required to be imparted to the chemical examiners deployed at the forensic science laboratories.

Justice Thakur observed the court had repeatedly noticed “breaches” of the peremptory statutory provisions either by the investigating officers or by the chemical examiners. Even at the time of production of the case property in the court, the investigating officers were extremely negligent in testifying that the seals on the cloth parcels did completely tally with the numbers and the English alphabets endorsed at the crime site by them. As such, it appeared that the investigating officers concerned were required to be awakened in this respect.

The DGP was also asked to intimate to the High Court Registry whether all investigating officers and the chemical examiners within the state had been imparted the trainings within six months.
