Even as the police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the Nirankari Bhavan blast case with the arrest of Bikramjit Singh (26) of Dhariwal village, his mother Sukhwinder Kaur appeared shocked over the development and denied the police charge that he was involved in terrorist activities.

“It is unbelievable. My son is innocent and is being falsely implicated,” she said. According to her, Bikramjit was picked up on Monday evening from the village.

As Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh announced his arrest, residents of the village reached his residence. Upset, they expressed their anguish with the development. His uncle Surjit Singh alleged that the police were saving their skin by implicating Bikramjit in the incident.

His friend Malkeet Singh, who studied with him till higher secondary, said Bikramjit was a good-natured person. He said his arrest in the bomb blast had shocked all in the village. “He used to help people and couldn’t kill anyone,” he said.

Sarpanch Rashpal Singh claimed that when the bomb blast took place, he was working in his fields. He said heavy police force reached Bikramjit’s residence on Monday and searched the entire house. They also took his laptop in their custody.

Bikramjit Singh is a farmer while his elder brother Gursher Singh had gone to Canada on a study visa. The family owns seven acres of agricultural land in Dhariwal Bagga village. His father Sukhwinder Singh died when he was five years’ old.

When the media reached his village, announcements were being made from the village gurdwara claiming that he was innocent.

Pillion rider Avtar Singh, who is also wanted in connection with the attack, was part of the Satkar Committee group that had disrupted the religious congregation of the sect organised by its followers in the Lopoke area a few days ago. However, Bikramjit Singh was not part of that group, said SSP Parampal Singh.

The police said Bikramjit was driving the bike and had cornered the gatekeepers, while Avtar Singh merged in the crowd of followers and entered the premises easily. Avtar lobbed the grenade at the congregation.
