Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsA controversy erupted in Moga during Block Samiti Chairperson elections today when Congress party block samiti member Amanjeet Sangha was allegedly abducted at gunpoint by unidentified assailants.
It is alleged that the abduction took place around 11 am just as the elections were about to commence.
Congress block samiti member Amanjeet Sangha and his brother Jaswant Singh were travelling in an Alto car to the District Commissioner's office to participate in the elections. It is alleged that near Ghalaklan village, their vehicle was surrounded by unknown individuals in 3-4 vehicles. Armed assailants forcibly abducted Sangha at gunpoint and fled the scene, alleged Jaswant Singh.
Following the kidnapping, Congress party leaders launched accusations against the ruling government: Moga Congress block in-charge Malvika Sood alleged the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lacks the required majority, prompting them to orchestrate the abduction to influence the chairperson elections.
"This is the murder of democracy," she alleged, demanding justice. She called for the immediate cancellation of the day's election and safe recovery of Amanjeet Sangh.
She demanded that accountability for the abduction be fixed. Following the kidnapping, senior Congress leaders and party workers staged a massive protest outside the Sadar police station, demanding action against those responsible for the abduction.
The timing of the abduction is significant, occurring just hours before the scheduled block samiti chairperson elections. Congress party leaders have suggested this is a deliberate attempt to disrupt the democratic process and influence the electoral outcome. Police have registered the case and investigation is underway.
Authorities are working to locate Amanjeet Sangha and identify the perpetrators of the kidnapping, claimed the police.
Congress party leaders have urged the state government to launch an immediate and impartial investigation and ensure the safe recovery of the abducted member.
