Tarn Taran, December 7

The Harike police have arrested three persons involved in the murder of a migrant labourer, whose body was recovered half burnt at Harike Pattan, 35 km from Tarn Taran, on Thursday morning.

The body was earlier identified to be that of Anoop Singh (27), who belongs of an Amritsar-based business family. A case under Sections 302 and 201 of the IPC was registered on the statement of Tarlok Singh, Anoop’s father.

Dhruv Dahiya, SSP, said here today that the family had misled the police by identifying the body as that of Anoop’s but the body was that of migrant labourer Babba, who lived near the family’s house.

The SSP said the three arrested accused were Anoop Singh, his brother Karandeep Singh and their domestic help Karan.

Dahiya said Anoop and Karandeep had confessed to their crime. They said they had taken several loans and had some insurance policies. The accused thought that by misleading everybody that Anoop had died, they could get money from his insurance policy and could clear the debt.

The SSP said Karandeep told the police that Anoop and their servant took Babba to Harike in their car. Karandeep, too, followed them in his car to keep a watch. They stabbed Babba with sharp-edged weapons and later burnt the body.
