Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has claimed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has presented the “best Budget” ever as it has increased allocation for basic amenities.

“The impact of the best Budget will be seen in the coming days. Ours is the first-ever government of Punjab which has not imposed any new tax in the first year government formation. Earlier, governments presented such Budgets in the run-up to the elections,” he told the media here today.

“The AAP government has increased the budgetary allocation for school and higher education by 16.2 per cent and technical education by 48 per cent. Besides, it has set aside Rs 200 crore for cash-starved Punjabi University, Patiala,” said the minister.

The Finance Minister said that in the coming days, the positive impact of the Budget would be visible across Punjab as the government had started establishing 16 medical colleges, 117 mohalla clinics and 100 schools of eminence.

“Before framing the Budget proposals, the government took a feedback from Punjab residents. I visited several districts and met residents. Our teams noted down their suggestions, some of which have been included in the Budget,” Cheema said, adding the Budget had been prepared as per the requirements of Punjab residents.

“We did not prepare the Budget by sitting in AC offices, as previous governments used to do,” he said

On the allegations of “slow investigation” into alleged scams of the previous governments, Cheema said: “The charges are baseless. The police and other investigating agencies are collecting evidence against former ministers and MLAs, who robbed the state exchequer and amassed properties. The details of each wrongdoing by former ministers are being collected. I do not want to share more information. Everything will be disclosed once they are arrested.”
