Chandigarh, August 1
The traffic enforcement and safety wing of the Punjab Police has postponed a drive to check underage driving for 20 days.
Initially, the SSPs across the state were asked to check underage driving from August 1. After holding discussions with the stakeholders, it has been decided to give additional time so that the parents can make alternative arrangements for the pick and drop of their wards.
Last month, the office of Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Road Safety) had asked the officers to sensitise children below the age of 18 that in case they were found to be driving two-wheelers and four-wheelers, their parents would be subject to legal action under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019.
The parent of a minor, who violates the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act (Amendment) 2019 with respect to underage driving, could face imprisonment up to three years and a fine of Rs 25,000.
