Amritsar, October 15

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday laid the stone for a number of development projects for the holy city. He credited Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu with procuring permission from the Railways for ROB projects.

The works worth Rs 127.86 crore, include ROBs at Vallah level crossing on the Amritsar-Delhi line and on the Amritsar-Attari section at Khajana Gate, an RUB at Jaura Phatak on the Amritsar-Delhi section and another on the Amritsar-Pathankot section and a flyover at Sant Singh Sukha Singh Chowk on the Majitha Road, besides the extension of the Bhandari Bridge.

Capt Amarinder Singh announced a slew of tourism projects worth Rs 187.47 crore with an addition of another Rs 50 crore for tubewells to ensure seamless water supply as a stopgap arrangement prior to the introduction of a canal-based water supply network.

“We are close to implementing the canal-based water supply system. We have shortlisted Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala in the first phase as water level is receding in these areas making it unfit for drinking,” the CM said.

Several significant tourism projects worth Rs 37.46 crores were already underway, while another Rs 110.01 crore worth of projects were in the pipeline, he added.

Sidhu said the Tourism Department had received tenders for the conservation and landscaping of the historic Gobindgarh Fort for Rs.13.95 crore, while Rs 15.18 crore works were already in progress.

A sum of Rs 8 crore would be spent on the conservation and setting up of a museum on the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Summer Palace. It was likely to be completed by the end of September next year, he said.

Besides, Rs 5.28 crore had already been spent on the conservation and adaptive reuse of the historic Town Hall building as food street. Another Rs 10 crore had been sanctioned for the beautification of the road in front of Durgiana Temple and Rs 7 crore for different development works at Ram Tirath, the minister said.

Those present included Education Minister OP Soni, Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, MLAs Raj Kumar Verka, Sunil Dutti, Harpartap Singh Ajnala, Santokh Singh Bhalaipur, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Dharamvir Agnihotri and Inderbir Singh Bolaria.

Seats reserved for SAD-BJP leaders

Three chairs on the dais bearing reservation stickers for Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Malik and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla surprised Congress workers. Sidhu later clarified that these leaders were invited to the function, but they didn’t turn up. These chairs were occupied by Congress MLAs.
