Centre submits threat report in sealed cover on Punjab leader Bikram Majithia to high court
The court was hearing a petition filed by Majithia, claiming that he faces a serious threat and therefore his security arrangements should be reviewed and appropriate security should be provided to him
The Central Government has submitted an intelligence report regarding potential threat perception to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a sealed envelope. Additional Solicitor General of India Satya Pal Jain, appearing on behalf of the Centre, informed the court that the report had already been sent to the Punjab Government on February 27, so that the state government could take action on it.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Majithia, claiming that he faces a serious threat and therefore his security arrangements should be reviewed and appropriate security should be provided to him. The petition also states that his continued participation in political activities and public events has increased his security risk.
The Punjab Government stated that it needed more time to study the Central Government’s report and properly evaluate all security-related aspects. The court adjourned the hearing of the case to March 17 and directed the Punjab Government to clarify its position before the next date of hearing.
During the last hearing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Centre and Punjab Government to conduct a fresh assessment of threat perception to the Akali leader and sought sealed cover reports by March 6. The court also directed that till the next date of hearing, the state of Punjab shall ensure that Majithia is adequately protected. The court was hearing a plea pending since April 2025 from Majithia seeking restoration of Z plus security cover.
DS Sobti, advocate, appeared on behalf of Majithia.
