Believe it or not, Government Primary School, Kokomajri, Sunam, has been functioning from a single room. Apart from studies, the same room is being used to store mid-day meal material, school record, staff room, library and office of the school incharge.

According to the information, there are 32 students enrolled in the school, out of which 12 are pre-primary students while remaining are in Class 1 to V. There are two regular teachers and a volunteer.

“We hold the classes in a single room. It causes problems to all the students. As we cannot make sitting arrangements outside in this biting cold, the room is always jam-packed. Apart from students, all other material is also stored in the same room,” said Rachpal Kaur, school incharge.

“One can imagine the condition of students and teachers. The lone room is being used as a classroom for students up to Class V and staff room. In such a situation nothing is audible to the students,” said a labourer, whose son study in the school.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Sunam, Aman Arora, who visited the school said, “It’s shocking that despite getting ranked eighth among 53 schools of Sunam block, the school lacks basic amenities. I will convert this school into a smart school by providing all the facilities.”

Arora said he has prepared a detailed report and would take up the matter with the Education Minister. Moreover, the land allotted for construction of the school building has been lying unused.

Deputy District Education Officer of Sangrur Harjeet Singh could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
