With the efforts of Capt Amarinder Singh, the increasing fissures in the Congress Phagwara unit have been plugged to some extent. Ex-minister Joginder Singh Maan, who had showed resentment at the ticket being given to IAS officer Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, was pacified by the CM himself.

Later, Cabinet Minister Sunder Sham Arora, along with MLA Navtej Singh Cheema and candidate Dhaliwal, visited Maan’s residence on Wednesday to cool him down.

A joint meeting of the said factions was held here today and the leaders joined hands and announced to work hard to ensure Dhaliwal’s victory.

Arora, MLA Cheema, Maan, Dhaliwal, BCC chiefs Sanjeev Bugga (urban) and Daljit Raju (rural) addressed the function.

Simarjit Bains visits town

Meanwhile, Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) leader Simarjit Singh Bains visited Phagwara and indicated the candidature of Jarnail Nangal (45). Nangal joined politics in 1992 by becoming the president of Nangal village. He contested the 2012 Assembly elections as BSP candidate and polled 26,165 votes. He remained the state general secretary of BSP for several years but quit the BSP and joined the Congress in March 2016. He later resigned from the party and joined the LIP. He contested the 2017 Assembly elections from Phagwara as an AAP-LIP candidate and got 32,374 votes.

On the other hand, no candidate has filed his/her nomination papers on the fifth day today, said Returning Officer-cum-Phagwara SDM Latif Ahmed.
