Expressing anguish over the passage of farm Bills in the Lok Sabha, Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra today resigned as the party legislator. “It is my personal decision. I am answerable to my farming community which has been asking about the sacrifices being made by elected representatives for the cause of farmers,” Nagra said while justifying his resignation.

Tweeting the information, Nagra said, “Deeply saddened by the passage of farm Bills by the BJP-Akali government. I hereby tender my resignation as the MLA of Fatehgarh Sahib in support of the farmers’ cause.”

On being questioned about resigning when the Capt Amarinder-led Congress government and party MPs have been strongly opposing the Bills, he said rising above political affiliation, he had heard his “inner voice” as it was a black day in the history of Punjab. He said he was upset that elected representatives had not heard the voice of the farmers.

“As an MLA, this is what I could do to register my protest strongly. I do not want to be a part of the history which will remind everyone about this major setback to the farmers,” he said. A senior government functionary in the Chief Minister’s Office expressed surprise over Nagra’s decision.
