Congress protests worker’s arrest for ‘disrespecting’ broom

Party workers disassembled brooms as a mark of protest.

Earlier in the day, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring strongly condemned the “dictatorial” and “authoritarian” action of the Punjab Police in arresting the party worker for a mere “symbolic act of resistance”.

“Such action against a Congress worker simply because he had disassembled a broom shows how frustrated and insecure the AAP government has become in Punjab,” he said.

Warring said while the AAP had not taken any time in arresting Arshdeep, for what it felt disrespect to its party symbol, it had shown complete paralysis when it came to taking action against the sacrilege of the holy Guru Granth Sahib.

He reminded the AAP and its leaders that they had promised justice in the sacrilege cases within 24 hours, but had taken no action despite having been in power for more than four years.

Warring, who also disassembled a broom, asserted the AAP’s strong reaction to a small symbolic gesture was telling. “Today, you view such small acts as disrespect, what will you do when the people throw you out of power in the elections?” he questioned, adding that the AAP’s days in power were numbered.
