Ahead of the Assembly polls, the “sacrilege” attempt at Amritsar has left the Congress worried. Already being targeted by opponents within the party and outside, the CM Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government is under pressure to fulfil its promise of bringing to book those behind the 2015 sacrilege incidents.

No deterrent

Some forces are plotting to spoil the peace of Punjab. If the culprits of the previous sacrilege incidents had been punished, nobody would have dared to commit such a crime. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP convener

Hang the guilty

Divisive forces are trying to create tension in the state as elections are approaching. The sacrilege of any holy book is intolerable and persons involved in it must be hanged. Navjot Sidhu, PCC Chief

Yesterday’s incident has brought the party under the scanner once again for delay in giving justice in the past sacrilege incidents. Condemning the Amritsar incident as “unpardonable and done with vote politics in mind”, PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, during a public rally at Malerkotla, said the perpetrators of sacrilege should be given strict punishment as per the Constitution.

Former PCC chief Sunil Jakha said it was a provocative act with malicious intent. “I request the state government to investigate the matter with utmost urgency,” he said.

Political analysts feel yesterday’s incident could prove detrimental to the prospects of the Congress and Akalis. “Had the Congress been proactive in bringing to book those behind the sacrilege incidents, the anger would have remained against the Akalis. With little time left for the government and reservation among Malwa MLAs to act against the Dera Sacha Sauda, the situation could not be convenient this time,” he said.

CM Channi vows thorough investigation

CM Charanjit Singh Channi has promised a thorough probe to “unmask the real conspirators” behind the incident. He urged the people to extend support to the government in foiling the “nefarious designs” of anti-social elements
