Debt-ridden farmer dies by suicide

A debt-ridden farmer allegedly died by consuming some poisonous substance at Gujjarpura village here on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Jarnail Singh (45). He owed Rs 17 lakh to bank and a commission agent.

The victim owned non-cultivable two acre in the Mand area. Jarnail had been getting notices from the bank to pay loan instalments and the commission agent was also pressurising him to repay the amount. The victim’s eldest son had also died by suicide over debt a year ago.

His wife passed away six months go. Jarnail is survived by two sons — Jarmanjit Singh (17) and Jagroop Singh (16). The police have registered a case.
