Over two months after then Moga SSP Raj Jit Singh Hundal filed a reply on a habeas corpus petition in contradiction to the report submitted by a warrant officer appointed by the Bench, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday imposed costs of Rs 25,000 on the state DGP for not filing an affidavit.

Justice Daya Chaudhary, on the previous date of hearing, had directed the DGP to file a reply by way of an affidavit. Justice Chaudhary’s order came on a petition by Samanjeet Kaur through counsel Pradeep Virk. She had moved the High Court seeking the appointment of a warrant officer for her husband Beant Singh’s release.

Alleging illegal detention by the Baghapurana SHO, Virk had submitted that Beant was targeted as he was known to the family of Kulpreet Singh, alias Neeta Deol, an accused in the Nabha jailbreak case.

The petitioner claimed that Hundal’s reply was based entirely on lies and a false statement.
